They sometimes emphasized their American selves to distinguish between themselves and the other racial and ethnic groups of the West—those that could be viewed as less American: Native American Indians, ethnic Mexicans, and Asian immigrants. Those groups, of course, had their own notions about the West, notions explored in the other volumes of this series. The West was more than a frontier process or a place on the map. It was more than merely a unique section of the nation. It was also a powerful idea that, for 200 years, gripped the hearts and minds of Americans in a way that few other ideas ever would.

Rail lines seldom penetrated yeoman areas, and planters did not use them to market their cotton crops, which were floated downriver to be sold in the Southern seaports—New Orleans, Mobile, Charleston—whose fortunes in turn were tied to cotton exports. And so the frontier regions of the North and South reflected the direction of their own section. Had the West stopped at the Mississippi, these divergent frontier regions might have coexisted for a very long time, for both were prosperous for the white majority and neither frontier was reliant on the other.

The tables could be turned, of course. As rival European powers forced their way into the trade, each newcomer found it useful to form alliances with the downtrodden tribes and pit them against the tribes that had been enslaving them, and so the hunters could become the hunted. For our purposes, the details of this horrific process are less important than the result: slaves brought into the Americas were not merely “African slaves”; they were also an ethnically diverse population that had been violently uprooted and thrown together.
